A settlement between the federal Department of Justice and two airlines in the midst of a merger could benefit East Coast travelers. The settlement directs American Airlines and US Airways to give up takeoff and landing slots at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, and LaGuardia Airport in New York City. In response, Southwest Airlines announced that it would purchase 22 of the LaGuardia slots, which would increase competition and keep fares in check.
In other news, airlines are appeasing weary travelers by giving passengers gifts and other goodies during their trips. Also, car rental companies Hertz and Enterprise announced that they will employ “green” means to clean their vehicles in order to attract environmentally conscious customers.
